Anton Hansch came from an old Viennese family and was born in the then suburb Windmühle 87 of the parish of Laimgrube (today Gumpendorfer Straße 26). He studied from 1826-36 at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts in the landscape painter Josef Mössmer. Study trips, often together with his friend Friedrich Gauermann, took him to the Alpine region. 1848 Hansch became a member of the Vienna Academy, 1861 desKünstlerhauses. In 1875 Hansch moved to Salzburg, where he died a year later. In honor of the artist was named in 1930 in Vienna Hietzing the Hanschweg.

Anton Hansch is the most important alpine and mountain painter of Austria in the second half of the 19th century. His pictures are mostly idealized and heroically tuned.
