Out of the book "Het Groote Tafereel der Dwaasheid". -- with some staining on the lower margin, somewhat deposited there, otherwise in very good condition. This engraving originates from a significant narrative detailing one of history's most notorious financial collapses, famously known as the Mississippi Bubble incident. It comprises 18 compartments marked A through S, designed to be separated and utilized as playing cards. Each compartment showcases a distinct figure engaged in peculiar activities or circus acts; for instance, in compartment B, a man aims an arrow at the sun while attempting to capture scampering rabbits and mice. Additionally, in compartment G, a strong man clenches a bench between his teeth, while compartment M depicts one man balancing a chair on his foot as another dives through a burning barrel. Notably, compartment S portrays a man straddling a cannon, bound at the wrists, while the devil, portrayed as Professor Bombarismi, holds a wheel and ignites the cannon's fuse. The Mississippi Bubble was instigated by John Law, a Scottish financier who established the Banque Générale (central bank) in France and later gained control of Louisiana, founding the Compagnie de la Louisiane d'Occident in 1717. Law devised an elaborate scheme to exploit the region's abundant resources, attracting widespread investment not only in France but across Europe. This fervor led to the emergence of numerous overseas companies, including the English South Sea Company and several smaller entities in the Dutch Republic, causing share prices to skyrocket amidst speculative frenzy. However, the bubble burst in 1720, triggering panic selling, a collapse in share prices, and eventual bankruptcy for the company. The repercussions extended beyond financial ruin for individual investors, shattering confidence in similar enterprises and leaving thousands across Europe financially devastated. || "Het Groote Tafereel der Dwaasheid", also known as The Great Mirror of Folly, stands as a monumental testament to the financial turmoil of the early 18th century, encapsulating the aftermath of the South Sea Bubble and other crashes. Published in Amsterdam in 1720, this lavish volume comprises a diverse array of materials, including pamphlets, legal documents, economic analyses, poems, satirical plays, maps, and even playing cards. Reflecting the interconnectedness of the European financial markets, it vividly portrays the consequences of a speculative frenzy, illustrating the folly of investors through satirical plays, poems, and visual satire, while referencing historic events such as Tulipmania in the Dutch Republic (a time when the prices of tulip bulbs spiked and then abruptly plummeted in 1637) and the above mentioned South Sea Bubble.
