This book presents a comprehensive survey of the field of gas chromatography with, as the title suggests, primary emphasis on the gas-liquid technique. As noted in Chapter 1, the growth of this separation technique is increasing at a rate of more than 40 per cent per year, 10 years after its inception. This clearly is a tribute to the creativity of its inventor, Dr. A. J. P. Martin, without whose contributions chromatography would not be the broad and interesting area of endeavor it is. For the authors, this growth necessarily created complications, such as continual manuscript revision (to September 1961) and, later, limited revision of the galleys. A modest success in keeping abreast of the literature is indicated by the inclusion of numerous 1961 and a few 1962 references. This book is designed primarily for workers in the field of gas chromatography and for graduate students and industrial research chemists in chemistry, petroleum, food, medicine, and the many other fields in which this technique has proved so useful. It is hoped that this book will prove useful as a supplementary text in the several short courses in gas chromatography presented each year throughout the country. We have attempted to write the book in such a way that the beginner in the field would have a working knowledge of gas chromatography after reading the first four chapters. The remaining chapters discuss areas of gas chromatography in detail and are intended to acquaint the reader with the most recent advances. As a result of many discussions with individuals and groups, the authors have become aware of a need for relating the fundamentals of gas chromatography to parameters which can be experimentally con-trolled. To this end, theory, apparatus, and practice, together with a limited consideration of applications, have been combined in this volume. Care has been taken to include as much useful information as possible. In many cases, the theoretical conclusions have been correlated with laboratory experience, as reported in the literature or observed by the authors and their co-workers. This is emphasized in Chapter 2, dealing with practical aspects of gas-liquid chromatography. Additional experimental considerations are included in the chapters dealing with qualitative and quantitative analysis, trace analysis, the separation of high boiling compounds, special, Leinen, ca. 16 x 23,5, 450 Seiten mit zahlreichen Bildern
