Lang was the son of the merchant Heinrich Lang and his wife Katharina Kaufmann. After school, Lang began to study architecture in his hometown. Later he moved to the same subject at the Berlin Bauakademie, where he became a student of Heinrich Strack.
On a trip to Italy, which Lang did in 1869-70 for his ailing health, he liked painting. His friend, the painter Carl Schuch strengthened him in this and gave him as a student to Alexander Strähuber.
