Freie Beschreibung: Only a couple of hundred years ago Sweden was, to the great majority of strangers, an unknown land near the Pole, and in their imagination they pictured a world of snow where the people walked about clothed in skins, and wolfs and bears were the lords of the forest. A few travellers who had found their way to this distant winter land returned with stories of a queer race of people in the farthermost north who followed their herds of half-wild animals in a roadless wilderness. The land round the Arctic Circle is now incorporated in the world's great commercial intercourse — its natural riches, the woods of the forests and the ore of the mountains are converted to use by modern industries working with American speed, and Sweden has a well known sound all over the world. There are convenient steamer communications between the Continent and the Swedish ports, and the tourist who now strolls in Hyde Park in London, Unter den Linden in Berlin or along the canals in old Amsterdam can, after a short journey by air or water, step on to Swedish soil. Shining railway lines radiate all over Sweden, highroads, canals and lakes open the way to far off hidden districts. The whole big country — the sagaland of Europe — is accessible to everybody. But the wilderness and adventure have not altogether given place to modern times. The Northern forests still remain — mile after mile, right down to the southernmost province of the country. Under the drooping fir trees highwaymen and outlaws no longer hide, but the forest lakes stare like great black eyes and the giant elk still walks in the undergrowth in the eternal dusk of the forests.
