Schallplatten waren von Anfang an beliebt. Die erste Serienproduktion von Schallplatten lief 1890 in Thüringen. Zwar war die Qualität der Musik miserabel, aber schon 1914 gab es im Deutschen Reich 500 verschiedene Marken von Schallplatten. Als die Industrie 100 Jahre später, Anfang der 90er, den „Tod der Schallplatte“ verkündete, hatte niemand mit der Beliebtheit vom Vinyl gerechnet. Trotz des Siegeszugs der CD werden noch heute in Deutschland jährlich über eine halbe Million LPs hergestellt. Denn die Fans der Schallplatte sind nicht ausgestorben.
Das hat zwei Gründe. Es sind vor allem die Liebhaber des Rock, des Pop und des Jazz, die auf Vinyl schwören. Das liegt nicht am Kratzen und Rumpeln. Sie meinen, Schallplatten hätten einen brillanteren und weicheren Klang. Das stimmt auch, ist aber auf Klangverfälschungen zurückzuführen, die sich bei der Produktion von Schallplatten nicht vermeiden lassen. Zweitens haben viele ihre LPs behalten, weil es sie als CD anfangs gar nicht gab. Heute werden manche Schallplatten, ob LP oder Single, als echte Raritäten gehandelt.
Die erste Schallplatte auf Vinyl gibt es seit den 30er Jahren. Nach dem Krieg wurde sie massenhaft produziert: als Single mit 45, und als LP mit 33 Umdrehungen pro Minute. Beiden Formaten gemeinsam war neben dem Material PVC (Vinyl) die Mikrorille. Gerade im Bereich Rock und Pop ließ sich die Single gewinnbringend vermarkten, wobei Jazz und Klassik überwiegend auf die LP gepresst wurde.
Vor den Vinylscheiben gab es bereits die Schellackplatten, die zwar schon gleich aussahen und funktionierten wie die heutigen Schallplatten, die aber weniger gut haltbar waren und schnell zerbrachen.
Doch die Musik ist nicht alles: Es war die Größe der LP-Hülle, die seit den 60ern im Rock und Pop dazu führte, den Schallplatten ansprechende Verpackungen zu geben. Zu den Klassikern dabei zählen zahlreiche Beatles-Alben oder die Motive von Pink Floyd. Aber auch Peinlichkeiten aus der Metal-Szene sind bei diesem Bemühen herausgekommen sowie Skandalbilder – etwa das Motiv von Virgin Killer der Scorpions.
